Halloween Duochrome/Opalescent Mermaid’s Tail Eyeshadow Look with All Affordable Products

bblogger, Halloween, Makeup, Tutorial

If you’re planning on being a mermaid for Halloween or feeling like you need a duochrome look in your arsenal read on for how to get this look! It’s not that difficult and I did it with all affordable products.

I have always loved Halloween makeup and FX makeup. I like the idea of becoming someone else for a night. Mermaids may or may not be real, but I like to think they are, and their tails are the inspiration for this look. I just picture the iridescent tails of the mermaids in the cove in Peter Pan shining in the moonlight or Ariel’s in The Little Mermaid. I think this look would pair beautifully with a lavender shell bikini. 😊💜🌊

Lately I have been obsessed with duochrome shadows. I am truly becoming a duochrome junkie. I just want pretty shiny things like Ariel! Is that so bad? 😭

This look was inspired by these two products:

Maybelline’s Waves of White 24 Hour Color Tattoo Eyeshadow, above, which is a creamy white shadow with opalescent blue, green, and purple shimmer, and the brownish reddish eyeshadow with teal and duochrome reflects in Wet n Wild’s Comfort Zone Palette, below.

Image found in Pinterest.

The shade I used is the one swatched on the middle finger. By the way, according to many makeup blogs, it is a dupe for Mac’s Club eyeshadow below:

Image from The top swatch is the shadow without a base and the bottom is it with a base/primer.

It looks nothing like what how it does in the pan:

16.00 on for a full sized eyeshadow single. 6.00 for a Pro Palette refill. (Not bad for if you just want to take it out for a spin to see if you even like it.)

It appears to be a dull medium toned neutral greyish brown/taupe. You have to swatch it to see the magic beneath the surface.

It is also extremely similar to this shadow above and below by Prestige Cosmetics in Hocus Pocus. It goes without saying or swatching that it is amazing. I need to check this brand out as it’s one of those great underrated ones apparently.

Here’s a close up of the Hocus Pocus shadow. I need it.

Believe it or not, I actually found The 24 Hour Color Tattoo Eyeshadow in a bin at my local 99¢ Store. I’m not kidding. They have bins full of unloved lonely Milani, Maybelline, Wet n Wild, and other products on the regular. It’s worth a look. You can also pick it up here on Amazon for $10 plus $3.89 if you really want it. You might after seeing this swatch:

You can use any iridescent shadow you have at home. There are actually tons o great indie brands sell in awesome iridescent/duochrome products on Etsy. Here are some awesome opalescent ones by the brand Spectrum Cosmetics. Makeup Geek makes amazing duchrome shadows too. Honestly the list goes on and on.. You can even use a highlighter like Fenty Beauty’s Match Stix Shimmer Skin Stix in Confetti. Here it is below: 💜

First I started by prepping/priming my eyelids with Wet n Wild’s Photo Focus Concealer. I then used the first matte bone color in Wet n Wild’s Au Naturel Palette in Nude Awakening to set the lids. I then used the burgundy color and the taupey grey color in the same palette in my crease.

Image from

Those are the 7th and last colors in the palette, going from left to right.

I then used the same burgundy color to deepen the crease and all over the lid as a base for the duochrome color. After that, I used a little water to wet my finger and dipped it in the burgundy based color with teal duochrome I described before in Wet n Wild’s Comfort Zone palette.

It is the last color labeled “definer” in the second row. I tried wetting a brush with Urban Decay’s All Nighter Setting Spray and that worked great too. Any setting spray will do.

I used the 24 Hour Color Tattoo as a inner corner highlight, over the other duochrome shadow in the inner half of the eye, and as a browbone highlight. I love it as a browbone and inner corner highlight. You can’t see the inner corner highlight much as the teal shadow took over. I still love the look overall.

Even though it’s bold and not a typical neutral look, I feel like it could work for so many occasions. If you’re into Halloween makeup you can run free with an eye look like this and do your full face in shimmery duochrome loveliness. A glitter liner like Stila’s or Urban Decay over the center of the lid would be pure wonder. Opal highlights would work amazing with it as well. I don’t own any, otherwise I would’ve went for it.

Thank you so much for reading! I hope it inspired a Halloween look or a fun night-out look! More Halloween fun to come, as the day is now upon us!
