Bohemian Rhapsody

art, Boho, fashion, Fashion design, Fashionillustration, Jeans

I woke up with an image of this gorgeous blouse that was some kind of cross between hippie and Victorian. I couldn’t quite capture it, but I’m going to keep trying. I like this anyway, for the most part, but it turned into something else.

That’s okay though, art is like life, it leads you down mysterious roads. Sometimes it works, other times you have to keep searching.

Finding Yourself in a World of Options (Fashion & Otherwise) // Shoes I Can’t Wait to Wear This Spring

Boho, Boots, Career wear, Culture, Date, Denim, Design, Dress, Dresses, Dressy, fashion, Fashion design, interview, Jeans, life, shoes, Shopping, spring, style, Uncategorized

Kick-ass Chloe boots from a few seasons ago. Hands down one of my favorite fashion companies ever.

Finding yourself can be like finding the right shoes; oftentimes long-winded and at least a little painful. It can take years.

It’s always worth it though. There’s nothing like stepping into the right pair of shoes or knowing who you are and what you want. In light of yesterday’s holiday, dedicated to womankind, this post is dedicated to why and how you should pursue whatever you want.

Jeffrey Cambell x Anthropologie. I need these in my life.

It took me years to realize it’s okay and cute to wear comfortable shoes. Don’t get me wrong, I love my towering sexy heels as much as the next fashion-junkie girl. I love my Vikky Soft Pumas maybe just as much though.

Heaven on your feet & equally cute. Obsessed with this color.

I spent my high school years thinking I had to wear flats or Converse or inexplicably painful sandals almost every day and have the blister scars to prove it. On the other days I’d wear Keds or Vans. Thank God, otherwise the bone on my foot which protrudes would probably be worse off.

If you forgot to get me a birthday present, I’ll take these in an 8 or 8.5 please.

I feel like we as women put ourselves through the hoops to be some better version of ourselves and will stop at nothing. In high school we need to fit into a specific category and be zitless and never boyfriendless. At least that’s how I felt. In college we drink ourselves into oblivion and forge friendships based on shared goals of pushing the boundaries of whatever we couldn’t do in high school. At least, that’s what I did, in addition to really liking college and my classes. (Honestly). After that, we still try to emulate Instagram makeup and hold ourselves to some degree of presentability if we want to retain any hope of making a living and being a contributing member of society.

Free People. Presentable for work yet cute enough to go out.

At every stage in our lives as women we must find our way amongst categories and expectations, career-wise, socially, and yes, even within the realm of fashion. As a teenager, I looked ridiculous some days, and others I could pass for a model in some cool zine. I don’t regret looking ridiculous though. I was finding my voice, my identity, and my fashion sense.

Erdem. Seriously? How can you not be a shoe addict with so many gorgeous options?

I have realized that I need creativity and freedom in my life and I also need comfortable sneakers. To paraphrase Eva Longoria, in college I didn’t know what I want to do for the rest of my life, but I knew what kind of woman I wanted to be. This interesting article/interview is about why Eva decided to get a degree in Chicana/o Studies at CSUN while doing Desperate Housewives. Loved it. That’s my alma mater.

I feel as though fashion gives us the liberty to be whoever we want. Especially during spring, anything goes. One day you can be a futuristic moon dweller, another an austere modern lady in a monochrome utilitarian outfit, and the next an ethereal bohemian princess. I love that. It lets us find play around with who we want to be until we want, and one day we discover who that person was all along. So never stop playing dress up girls. It’s more important than the world thinks. πŸ˜‰

Love you all,

Maggie

Summer to Fall Transition OOTD

I seriously doubt I’ll ever get over this outfit. It’s me & my love for fall in a nutshell. I paricularly love the transition between the two seasons. I love the promise of what’s to come..and I love mini skirts, kimonos, bodysuits, and warm fall colors in case you haven’t noticed. 🍁

res_1472165874817

Loving those sixties bell sleeves right now, and always really.

IMAG2030

Seriously my fave fall colors. You can never go wrong with rust, olive, & mustard. Plus, the fact that the kimono is lightweight & this is a mini skirt makes it a good transition outfit. If youΒ live somewhere where it’s colder you could totally swap out the bodysuit for a turtleneck & add tights.

res_1472165756799.jpg

I may never get over this outfit. I’ll be living in these staples this season.

Top 3 Trends I’m Most Looking Forward To Wearing for Fall

Boho, Career wear, Date, Denim, Dressy, Fall, fashion, Jeans, Outer wear, Shopping, Uncategorized

IMG_20160725_114234

As many of you know, I’m all about fall. Living in LA is like living in a tv show…which is a good thing, but it seems like you’re literally living on a set that always stays the same. I guess life imitates art. It’s pretty much always sunny, but once in a while you’ll get a nice gray autumn-y day starting in about October. (September’s just plain summer.)

I also can’t help but be on the Pumpkin Spice Bandwagon. Love it and can’t get enough of it. You have no idea how excited I am about hitting up Starbucks for my PSL and Trader Joe’s for my other assorted pumpkin essentials as soon as September rolls around. πŸπŸ‚πŸ

So here are the top 3 things I’m most looking forward to wearing this Fall;

  • IMAG1538.jpg
  • 1- bomber jackets. I cannot get enough of bombers right now. I’m literally obsessed with them and want/need one in every color. This gorgeous mesh one with floral embroidery as well as everything else shown above and below is from Charlotte Russe.

Adorbs

These gorgeous embroidered ones above and below are by Fashion Nova.

Fashion nova’s stuff is beyond on fleek. Especially this bomber. πŸ“πŸ“πŸ’£

The lovely & stylish demonstrates how fun wearing bombers can be.

  • Military/army jackets
IMAG1372.jpg

All of these are Free People items, except for the tights.Β

I absolutely adore this Free People jacket. The peplum/ruffle gives the typically masculine jacket a feminine edge. As you can see, I’m really into stripes too. Always been.

IMAG1375_1_1.jpg

Here, they’re all by Free People except for the culottes. They’re by American Rag.

This super cute military inspired long vet below is by Guess and the crop top is by Free People. Seeing a trend? Yeah. I love Free People. πŸ‘πŸ’• I love juxtaposing masculine coats and shapes with feminine thingsthings, like the gorgeous Jules Sarinana below.

92b209ca04f88479fda7b2a1884691f9

She’s so cute here in her early days! Love her.

IMG_20160729_090313

  • Trench coats

IMAG1602

The soft and pretty one above is by Laundry. The jeans are by Free People, and the top is by French Connection. I cannot get over trench coats. Every fall and winter season I embrace them and doll them up a hundred ways. They never go out of style, they’re so classic and they can make a decent outfit upgrade to elegant.

4782895c036893a03e2cefc13f30de8a

Love this trench coat on her and this outfit. Found this pic on Pinterest. Does anyone know who this is?

So that concludes the three things I want to wear the most this fall. Of course, there are so many other things, which I will be covering! As you can tell, I wish it were cold enough to wear outerwear in LA…or that I were somewhere else. I love you LA, but I’m over this hot weather. 🌞

What kinds of posts do you guys like to read or want to see in the future?

Love,

Maggie

Hunt for the Perfect Jeans

Boho, Denim, Jeans, Magazines, Shopping, style, Summer, Uncategorized, vintage

IMG_20160723_151912.jpg

So you know how it’s sooo hard to find jeans that make your butt look good and basically hug you in all the right places? Me too. So that’s why I’m starting this series; “Hunt for the Perfect Jeans”. I’ll literally go anywhere or try anything to find the elusive “perfect” pair of jeans. Does it exist? Will they all suck? We shall find out! I’m so excited. πŸ˜€πŸ˜ First up: Urban Outfitters’ BDG high waisted jean.

  • IMAG1329.jpg

Here’s me bending down trying to take the “perfect” selfie/close-up. Not so much, but it shows the wash really well. Love this medium wash and distressing. I’ll be judging these jeans mainly based on three criteria: wash, cut/fit, abd material. So here are the pros & cons:

PROSPROSPROS

  • This wash.is.like.sopretty. It’s a medium indigo wash & I love it.
  • The cut. This cut makes my thighs and butt look good and you know, that’s like the main thing good jeans should do.
  • The fabric. The quality of these jeans is very good. The fabric is thick yet stretchy, which I really like. I’m not in love with super thin stretchy or super thick unstretchy jeans. I’ve heard wonders about vintage unstretchy Levi’s 501s. I will have to try them!

Cons

  • The price. 69.00 (+ 6.90 for shipping if you’re ordering online) they’re not exactly within my budget. If they’re within yours, I wish I could borrow your credit card cus I would order them in every color. I know some people spend $400+ on designer jeans, but some of us have college debt/a real life so..yeah. However, if you’re a 27 snag these now on Poshmark! I saw them there for $25. πŸ˜±πŸ’™πŸ™Œ

That’s the only con I came up with though. I will definitely buy more and recommend them to friends. I once had a pair of BDGs for 7 yrs…wait I still have them. I will definitely buy more.

IMAG1324

That sums up my first venture into the hunt for the perfect jeanss. By the way, if you love to read fashion magazines like me check out the articles on denim in the current issue of Elle. They are literally everything. Especially the one by Lizzy Goodman on jean shorts and the trajectory of badassery and rebellion they have had and the role they have played in her life. This issue seriously encouraged me to do this series, even though i was already thinking about it. πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™

IMAG1402.jpg

This article is so literally me. 😍😍😍

Some more denim-y shots from this week:

IMG_20160720_110542.jpg

The supercute bomber jacket, jeans, and keyhole body suit are all from Fashion Nova. πŸ˜β€πŸ’•

IMG_20160722_082427.jpg

Couldn’t decide which top to get….so..you know..I need both. Top on the left from Free People and the one on the right from Lucky Brand. Both adorable. Lovely, sexy, and gorg skirt from Levi’s.

IMAG1277

All of these items are from American Eagle except for the sandals. I usually never shop there but I’m challenging myself for this hunt! I’ll be covering their jeans for sure because I loooved all this stuff.

IMAG1382.jpg

These are the Lucky Brand shorts I distressed and reworked myself a few weeks ago that I showed you guys. Still working on merch, just gathering funds! The t shirt is a Ramone’s tee I’ve had since high school. This shot is from a walk I took to the store. How exciting!

Love you guys! Thanks for reading! How do you like this hunt so far? Comments please. πŸ˜ŠπŸ˜πŸ’™

Style Crush Sunday

Boho, Dresses, fashion, Skirts, style, Styleicon, Uncategorized

fridaportrait

What makes someone a style icon? What makes Chiara Ferragni an It Girl and Audrey Hepburn a style legend? It’s partially the je ne sais quoi factor that you just can’t put your finger on, partially a unique and signature perspective on personal style, and partially a “no fu&#@ given” attitude, as in Frida Kahlo’s case. She’s one of my favorite people and I admire her unique sense of individuality and style. She wore traditional Mexican garb when it wasn’t fashionable and because she was proud of her heritage. Like me, her ethnic makeup was half western-European/white and half Mexican. She always embraced the beauty of Mexican clothing. She sure didn’t shy away from making a statement either.

So how do you incorporate a little bit of Frida’s badass vibes into your wardrobe and keep the look modern? I’ll show you! (Don’t worry a unibrow isn’t necessary)

res_1467760061823

  • Throw a poncho or wrap over a simple outfit. The one above goes well with a cream top, jeans, and strappy heeled or lace up sandals.
  • Don a pretty braided updo and incorporate flowers or ribbons into the braids. Go for a peasant girl/festival love child vibe.

I found this cute hairdo on Pinterest.

  • Wear an embroidered breezy dress with sandals as shown below. This one is from unique-vintage.com. They have some seriously cute stuff. πŸ‘—β€

Theae two are adorbs too and can by found on Etsy in madeintechnicolor’s shop;

As you can see, Frida-izing your look is pretty easy. Honestly, I think Frida’a style staples are having a moment. πŸ˜‰

It’s took me a while to post these, but here they are! I distressed them myself, applied patches, and personalized them. I’m into the patch trend this summer and I’m planning on stocking my Ebay and Etsy shop with more styles! I’m currently gathering supplies. πŸ˜‰πŸŽ¨

^Inspo for my creations! Chiara, you’re a fashion girl like no other. Thanks for being awesome.

Asos, you never cease to provide inspo either. Love the kawaii vibes. 🌈

Of course, I’m putting my own spin on these trends & I’ll be providing three styles: desert rose, kawaii cutie, and dia de los muertos.

Stay tuned loves. πŸ˜‰βœŒπŸŽ¨β€

Happy Monday!

Remember, it doesn’t have to suck as long as you do one thing you love today.

3 Ways to Wear a Wardrobe Staple

Boho, Date, Denim, fashion, Shopping, Summer, Uncategorized

res_1463864805934

You know that thing at the back of your closet that you’ve worn a million times but love anyway? Don’t throw it away! By the way, it’s okay! Not all fashionistas have disposable incomes! Fashion brands both established and new, I’m looking at you! Yes I want your stuff and yes I’ll write about you (if your stuff is bomb of course). Lol.

Anyways, you’ve seen them everywhere, you own a pair, your grandma does, and it’s okay! Yes boyfriend jeans have dominated the jean scene and I guess they’re here to stay, so go get yours out and Β refresh your boyfriend jean game now. So how to wear them this summer?

  • With a flowy tie dye top as I’m wearing above. I love these pinky orange colors together. This is a good relaxed weekend look. This one and all items pictured can be found at your neighborhood Forever 21. Yay to not spending your whole paycheck!

IMAG0192_1

Super cute agate/quartz necklace also from F21. My key to life necklace appeared to me magically. Seriously though, I found it.

  • With a lace-up bodysuit. Perfect for a date, girls night out, etc., as shown below.
res_1463865575643

Super cute agate/quartz necklace also from F21. My key to life necklace appeared to me magically. Seriously though, I found it.

IMAG0191

Obsessed with blush pink & bodysuits right now.

  • Lastly, with a band tee. You can never go wrong with David Bowie. I still miss him bad, and I know no one will ever replace him. 😒
res_1463865949203.jpg

Kinda into showing bra straps right now a la Carrie Bradshaw. Not in a ratchet way.

  • Tips:
  • Buy a size smaller, as my usual size was pretty big for me.
  • Chunky mules are a great investment as you can both dress them up or down.
IMAG0152_1

In love. Those fringed sandals are pretty darn cute too.

Thanks for reading! I appreciate you all! I hope I’ve inspired you even a little. 😊✌❀

Fashion Illustration Inspired by Wedding Season

Boho, fashion, Illustration, Summer, Wedding season, Weddings

IMG_20160609_103650

So all of the pretty pictures on Pinterest (yes I have a wedding board) and Instagram got me inspired to do a wedding season themed fashion illustration. I may do more because there are just so many places you can go with this theme (glam bride, romantic bride classic bride, etc.). Here I did a natural bride. Pretty, happy and herself.

I love drawing and painting with paper and real art tools but its so hard to get a good picture of the illustrations with my phone camera. Instagram has great tools that help bring photos closer to what my ilustrations actually look like. I used th above. The downside is Instagram cuts off pieces of photos. Still, my love affair with Instagram is far from over! Here’s the whole drawing with no white balance adjustment:

Which do you like better?

PS: It’s almost Friyay!!! 😊✌❀
